If you used to be like me and didn’t really understand all the hype about HD, Blu-ray and HDMI then let me shed some light on these amazing pieces of 21st century technology.
The age of the tube television is over and unless you’ve been avoiding the electronics aisle at your local Wal-Mart you’ll realise that TV’s have evolved and no longer resemble the big bulky boxes that we have all had since the mid 80’s!
So what does it all mean. Well lets begin.
1. HDTV – HDTV stands for High-Definition Television and basically means that if you have a HD signal from your cable or satilite provider that you’ll get the clearest most amazing picture you have ever seen. Playing a standard signal on your HDTV doesn’t look pretty but is just about watchable after you have been watching in HD!
2. HDMI – HDMI stands for High Definition Media Interface which allows you to connect other devices to show high definition content on your new HD TV, such as a Blu-ray player or a PS3.
3. Blu-ray Disk Player – Basically Blu-ray is a DVD player on steroids in that it shows movies in high-definition picture and sound. The picture is clear enough that you’ll feel like you are on the actual set of the movie.
4. 1080p vs 1080i. The simple explanation is that 1080p is the number of lines vertically that run down your HD-TV and the ‘p’ stands for progressive which means the image is not interlaced, which is 1080i. If you’re not sure of the difference then don’t worry, just make sure that both devices support 1080p as this gives you a much better picture then 1080i. Your future purchase may also support 1080i which is fine.
